Kwaito

Music of South Africa’s urban black youth, which first emerged in the 1990s. Kwaito is a mixture of South African disco, hip hop, R&B, ragga, and a heavy dose of house music beats.


Hip Hop has taken over now, Kwaito is no longer the same.



Kraal

An enclosure for livestock, or a rural village of huts surrounded by a stockade.


Make sure the kraal is clean before the elders come back.



Howzit

Common South African greeting that translates roughly as “How are you?”, “How are things?” or just “Hello”. It is derived from “How is it?”

Gatvol

Is an Afrikaans term for complitely fed up or very upset.


I am gatvol with Kaizer Chiefs.



Dagga

Dagga is another term for marijuanna or weed.

Apartheid

Literally means “apartness” in Afrikaans, apartheid was the policy of racial segregation implemented by the South African National Party from 1948 to 1994, resulting in the oppression and labour exploitation of South Africa’s black majority, and their systematic exclusion from the country’s mainstream economic, educational and social life.


The struggles of black people we see today is the legacy of the apartheid regime.

Iceboy

An iceboy / ice boy is a broke guy who drinks with guys who have money (usually guys he grew up with). They send him around to buy ice, open the beers for them and do all crazy things because he does not contribute financially.


Don't be fooled by all that alcohol he is carrying, he is just an iceboy and not the moreki.



Habiya

Another Xhosa term for vamna - which means a love portion given to your lover to make you love more.


"Ndingayitya nephepha layo lo habiya" - Driemanskap



Vamna

Is the Xhosa term for korobela - which is love potion given to your lover so that he/she only loves you.
It basically translates to yiva mna ndedwa (only hear me).


I won't mind even if you can give me ivamna.
